South African sensation, Tyla, has been making waves in the international music scene. Recently, she added another feather to her cap by winning the ‘Best International Act‘ at the 2024 BET Awards. This article takes you through the journey of this rising star, her music, her style, and the public’s perception of her.

The BET Awards Night

The 2024 BET Awards was a night to remember, especially for Tyla. Hosted at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, the event saw some of the biggest names in the music industry. Tyla, with her infectious energy and vibrant personality, stood out among the crowd. Her win as the ‘Best International Act‘ was a significant milestone in her career.

Tyla’s performance of her hit song “Jump” with Gunna and Skillibeng was a highlight of the evening. She took the audience on a safari ride with her debut performance. Clad in a brown two-piece bra and skirt set and black thigh boots, Tyla turned up the heat as she sang her track from behind a cage filled with dancers painted as a giant tiger. This was a subtle nod to her dedicated fanbase, the Tygers.

Tyla’s Reaction

Tyla’s reaction to her win was heartfelt and genuine. In her acceptance speech, Tyla expressed gratitude to her fans, family, and the BET community.

Oh my gosh this crazy, this is also very heavy again. First of all I love Sexyy Red. I love her so much,” she began. “This is such a gift to be here. I want to dedicate this one to Africa. I want to dedicate this to all the African superstars before me that didn’t get these opportunities that I’m getting. This is just amazing. Africa to the world guys.

Nominations

Tyla was nominated alongside some of the biggest names in the music industry. She received four nominations at the BET Awards this year, taking home wins for best new artist and best international act. Her latest performance comes after she canceled her debut concert tour around the release of her self-titled debut album in March.

Acceptance of the Award

Tyla accepted the award for “Best New Artist” onstage during the 2024 BET Awards at Peacock Theater on June 30, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Earlier in the evening, the singer received the “Best International Act” award, presented by actor Coleman Domingo.

Tyla’s Musical Journey

Tyla’s musical journey began in Johannesburg, South Africa. She signed with Epic Records in 2021 following the domestic success of her debut single, “Getting Late” (featuring Kooldrink). Her 2023 single “Water” catapulted her to international fame, entering the top ten in sixteen countries, including the UK and the US. Her self-titled debut album, released in 2024, received critical acclaim and moderate commercial success.

Personal Life

Born Tyla Laura Seethal in Johannesburg, South Africa, Tyla comes from a multicultural background. She is very close to her family and often expresses her gratitude for their support. Despite her rapid rise to fame, Tyla has managed to keep her personal life private. As of 2024, Tyla revealed that she is single.

Personality and Style

Tyla’s personality is as vibrant as her music. She is known for her bold style and fearless approach to self-expression. Her fashion choices, such as her sand dress at the Met Gala, have made headlines. Her music is a unique blend of pop, R&B, and Afrobeat elements.

Public Opinion

Tyla’s racial identity has sparked discussions online. Some American observers took offense to Tyla calling herself Coloured, a term that, according to outsiders, signifies mixed ethnic descent in South Africa, but within South Africa is a culture. Tyla addressed this issue, stating that she never denied her Blackness and that she identifies as both Coloured in South Africa and a Black woman.

Conclusion

Tyla’s journey is a testament to her talent, determination, and the power of music to cross borders. Her win at the 2024 BET Awards is just the beginning of what promises to be a long and successful career. As she continues to break barriers and make her mark on the global music scene, one thing is certain – the world can’t wait to see what Tyla does next!
